CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Johnny saw the gang gathering on the front porch as he drove nearer. Maya stood on the top of the steps, her sunshine hair dancing in the spring breeze, her smile welcoming him back. Suddenly, she grabbed hold of the railing and held on as if for dear life.

For a moment he was confused. Then he felt the shaking underneath him. The road buckled and rose up in front of the truck. “Everybody hold on!” He jerked the wheel left, hard, veering off the road, into the ditch and clung to the steering wheel to hold himself behind it. Breia pressed one hand to the ceiling and gripped the “oh-shit-handle” above the passenger door as Johnny kept the pedal down. The powerful motor carried the truck right through the ditch and out the other side, past the macadam barricade and back onto the pavement beyond as its passengers bounded up and down on its seats. He aimed for Kiley’s driveway and stomped it, but the ground was shaking under him still harder. He was almost there when a utility pole crashed right in front of him and he hit the brakes, leaving rubber on the pavement. Wires snapped in two, whipping and spitting sparks like electric cobras.

He looked around, spotted a gap and gunned it again. The truck lurched forward, veered left around one snapping power line, then over the top of the fallen pole, and then sharply right to avoid another live wire, and finally came to a stop on the front lawn.

“Inside, fast! Leave everything!”

Breia and Ryan dove out of the truck, scrambling for the front steps, only to fall as soon as they started to climb them, the shaking was so intense.

Johnny came behind, bracing them both, and Maya reached down from the top stair. Her other arm was wrapped around the post there. She clasped Ryan’s hand and pulled, and Ryan kept his arm around his sister. In that moment he seemed like a full-on man, determined, strong, and furious. He pulled Breia up with him. She was shaking and unsteady.

The minute Breia and Ryan were on the porch itself, the shaking stopped.

“Son of a …” Kiley picked herself up off the porch floor. Jack gave her a hand and asked if she was okay, but she didn’t answer. Instead, she shook her fist and shouted at the sky. “What the fuck is wrong with you? What kind of parents are you, anyway?”

Jack put his hands on her shoulders and said “Neighbors, sweetie.”

Said neighbors were emerging like recently frightened woodland creatures, stunned and shaken. They stood on their lawns, all up and down the road, probably wondering why the nice lady who lived where bodies had been buried, was shouting at something only she could see.

Kiley smiled at them, gave a finger wave and said, “Freakin’ earthquakes, anyway, am I right?”
